Follow-Up Interviews

Once the screening process is completed and you have conducted your own formal interviews, it's likely that you'll have one or two clear favourites for the job on offer.

Unfortunately, some people are less than honest about their intentions and every hiring manager has experienced a situation where a candidate has rejected a job offer at some stage.

This problem can be reduced or even eliminated by conducting a follow-up telephone interview that is designed to further qualify the interest of each candidate on your final interview list.

We have found that on many occasions after interview and prior to job offer, that some people suddenly lose interest in the position.

There are a number of reasons for this. They include, but are not limited to:

  • Something negative about the interview
  • Dislike of the working environment
  • The opportunity has not been sold effectively
  • Dislike of the interviewer or manager
  • Difficult commute
  • Possible counter-offer from current employer
  • Salary / package expectation not met

Our follow-up interview service is exclusively available to clients who have used either our application screening or telephone interviewing service for the same position.

The aim of the follow-up interview is to determine the precise level of interest in the position in offer, so that when the job offer is made, there are no nasty surprises.

Our questions are designed specifically to enable you, as the employer, to be confident in the job offers you make and provide you with a second chance to answer any concerns that your favourite candidate might have following the initial selection process.

Beware The Counter-Offer

Some people naturally perform very well at interviews and will often apply for positions even though they have no intention of leaving their current employment.

Instead, they set out with the express intention of receiving alternative job offers to use as leverage to get a pay rise or increased benefits without having to change jobs.

This is far more common than you might believe, but our follow-up interview will identify most of these individuals prior to any formal job offer being made.

Most employers don't find out that their chosen candidate isn't starting until the actual start date, by which time, any close second choice candidate is no longer available and the entire recruitment process has to start all over again.

Know The Parameters

Having undergone the selection and interview processas an employer, you'll probably think that you know exactly what you need to offer your chosen candidate in terms of remuneration package.

Unfortunately, this is where many employers fall down.

The follow-up interview affords us a unique insight in the candidate's thinking.

After meeting with you and in all probability, expecting a job offer, they naturally begin to consider their current position and package more seriously.

They look at things like how much more (or less) commuting time they will have. They look at the costs / savings benefits. They discuss everything in detail with their partners / spouses.

All of the discussions they have are not necessarily geared towards job acceptance - in fact, this is where the fear of change sets in and where most candidates are likely to have second thoughts.

Our role, with the aid of follow-up interview, is to overcome objections (which will be present) and to smooth the way for a job offer that is more likely to be accepted first time.

The follow-up interview is well worth the investment and will repay itself many times over.
